Gastrointestinal Problems

Individualized testing and treatment plans should be created to address gastrointestinal issues. Common gastrointestinal issues that can be improved with functional medicine and lab testing include:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)- a chronic condition characterized by symptoms of diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, bloating, and abdominal pain.
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)- excess bacteria in the small intestine-SIBO can arise from many conditions, but usually the development of the disorder is complex in nature.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)- a group of conditions that cause the digestive system to become inflamed. IBD includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • Candida/fungal overgrowth- candida is a yeast that may grow in the digestive tract due to a weakened immune system, hormone changes, or chronic diseases. It can lead to fatigue, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, recurring bladder infections, menstrual irregularities, food sensitivities, allergies, chemical sensitivities, or depression.

Elimination diets, supplementation, and reintroduction of foods can help resolve symptoms of many of these gastrointestinal problems. Lab testing can answer many questions about food sensitivities, hormonal imbalances, or micronutrient deficiencies to help guide your personalized nutrition and supplementation plan.
